In the first of two 75 lap Late Model Stock events,
Craig Moore set the fast time, but it would be
South Boston’s Jeb Burton on the pole, with
Joey Mahanes starting on his outside. Mahanes
would get going with a great start, allowing Burton
to lead the first lap, but then taking control
after that. Mahanes would lead from lap
2 until a lap 37 when the caution flag came out
for a Tracey Chambers spins.
On the subsequent restart, Mahanes would cut down
a left-rear tire, stacking up the field behind
him and causing a three-car wreck involving Paul
Bryant, Barry Beggarly and Melvin Langley.
The chaos from the restart would put Craig Moore,
the night’s fast qualifier, to the point.
Moore would lead every lap from lap 38 through
lap 65, when the lap-down Travis Robertson would
make contact with Moore, causing Moore to spin
and bring out the caution, giving the lead to
Terry Dease.
Throughout the long run with Moore in the lead,
Joey Mahanes was working his way through traffic,
and by the lap 65 restart, Mahanes had made his
way to the bumper of Terry Dease. Dease
would do his best to keep Mahanes behind him,
but Mahanes would make a pass with two laps to
go, holding back Dease just long enough to capture
the checkered flag. Dease would finish second,
with Ryan Glenski finishing third, Moore fourth
and Burton fifth.
Ryan Glenski would draw the pole for the second
75 lap race, with Craig Moore starting to his
outside. Glenski faltered at the start,
allowing Moore to take the lead for the second
time in two races. With the teams unable
to change tires between the first and second races,
Moore was forced to race with flat-spotted tires
from his first race spin. Clearly at a disadvantage,
Moore would fade back to Terry Dease, who would
make an easy-looking pass on lap 12. To
Dease’s dismay, race 1 winner Joey
Mahanes also slipped by Moore, moving to second.
For the second time in two races, Terry Dease
would find himself fighting off Joey Mahanes,
and also for the second time in two races, Mahanes
made the pass on Dease and wouldn’t look
back, leading the final 58 laps to win his second
race of the evening. Zachary Marks and Paul
Bryant would move through the field throughout
the race, finishing second and third, respectively.
Justin Newlin sat on the pole for the 50 lap Limited
Sportsman race, but it was Timmy Ferrell taking
the early lead. Lap 3 would see Newlin take
the lead back. Throughout the next 47 laps,
Ferrell made a few runs, getting underneath Newlin
but each time Newlin would pull away. In
the end, Newlin would take the checkered flag
for the first time in his Limited Sportsman career.
Timmy Ferrell would settle for second, with Kyle
Appel holding off a charge from Donald Brace for
third.
Keith Edwards remained perfect for the 2010 Grand
Stock season. Dennis Sargent Jr. led the
first 10 laps, but Edwards would make a pass on
the inside of Sargent, holding off the Raleigh
driver for the final 20 laps to win. Sargent
Jr. would fend off a late charge by Daniel Schadt
for second, with Schadt finishing third.
Daryl Gwynn led from flag to flag in the Southern
Ground Pounders (SGP) Open Modified division,
fighting off a mid-race run from Jerry Scott.
In SGP Sportsman, Todd Bradburry made a mid-race
pass on Tommy Buxton to take the victory.
Rodney Dye pulls to an easy victory in SGP Limited
Modified.
Cale Gale held off late charges from AJ Winstead
and Joe Scarbrough finishing to win in Rolling
Thunder Modifieds, and Michael Neal dominated
in Extreme Lightning, beating Shane Phillips and
Larry Isley.
